Hey Newarkers!
Y’all know by now I love me some Newark businesses, large and small, so I am starting a new series aimed at highlighting the many different establishments that line some of Newark’s busiest and renowned streets. Market Street Mondays will feature restaurants, retail shops, vendors, salons, health & wellness shops, and any other entity I think deserves some shine! From time to time you may even see individuals featured on Market Street Mondays. So without further ado let’s jump on in!
GET TO KNOW: Distinct 89
PROFILE: Urban culture retail store and event venue also known as a Clothing Lounge
THE LOCALE: 89 Market Street at Washington Street. Distinct 89 shares its block with the historic Bushberg Brothers Furniture building
THE DEETS: Distinct 89 is a unique urban fashion retail store. It is one of Market Street’s newest stores, having opened just 1 year ago. It is home to some well know brands such as DKNY but it is also a place where new designers can sell and showcase their hottest fashions. The store carries men’s and women’s fashions including plus sizes in some styles. Shoes and accessories are also available for men and women. The clothing is fashion forward and inspired by runway, hip-hop, and art! The Distinct 89 team prides itself on giving superior customer service that is sometimes hard to find at larger businesses.
WHY IT ROCKS: First of all, Distinct 89′s four co-owners are Newarkers! Born, raised, and residing here. Second, they are committed to community. They hire Newarkers to work in their store, have supported causes such as breast cancer research, work hard to employee local college and high school students, and have allowed their store to be a space where the hottest up and coming designers can break in to the marketplace. Finally, it’s a retail store that doubles as an event space! It comes complete with DJ equipment a balcony perfect for VIPs, and lighting. The Distinct 89 team has hosted birthday parties, fashion shows, book signings, and performances in their space.
IF YOU GO: Hours: Monday-Saturday 10:00am-7:00pm, parking can be a bit tough at certain hours of the day but it is easily accessible via public transportation. On my most recent visit, I took a bus from Penn Station and got off at Washington St. & Market.
